Liberty Island

The restoration of Liberty Island in the municipality of Mohács in Hungary was part of the WWF – Coca-Cola Partnership. Liberty Island is located in a side branch area of the Danube in southern Hungary near the border with Croatia. In 2009, with financial support from The Coca-Cola Company and additional EU funding, Liberty Island was purchased on behalf of the Danube-Drava National Park Directorate.

The two-mile-long forested island and its surrounding waters were revitalized by removing impediments to water flow, replanting native tree species to provide habitat for flora and fauna, and constructing trails and recreation areas for local residents and tourists.

The restoration work created an undisturbed natural floodplain forest, secured safer drinking water resources for the municipality of Mohács, and enhanced opportunities for eco-friendly tourism and recreation.
