Sturgeon Fish Pass across the Iron Gates Dam

Sturgeon are a migratory fish species. The Iron Gates Dam prevents them to reach their spawning habitats. For the past few years, WWF has been working closely with and supporting the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICDPR) as well as the governments of Romania and Serbia to investigate the feasibility of installing a fish passage across the Iron Gates dam.

Status of Fish Pass Progress, May 2011:

On May 10-13, 2011, a mission of representatives of the FAO, the ICPDR Secretariat, and governmental representatives of Romania and Serbia visited the Iron Gates dams to evaluate the possibility of fish passes being built for sturgeon and other fish migrants. The mission concluded that fish passages are possible.
